The Master’s Series: Selosse in three parts

Jacques Selosse champagnes are amongst the most highly regarded grower champagnes in the world. Anselme Selosse is somewhat of an iconoclast in his approach to producing champagne espousing a philosophy that he says is counter to the traditional “assemblage” or blending that is a core part of champagne production, especially amongst the larger houses.
Amongst the innovative (some would say controversial) practices he introduced was fermentation in new oak barrels and a solera system for Substance. Anselme Selosse retires this year and his son Guillaume takes over the reins this year. This is an appropriate point to review his wines. The wines are anything but simple and it would be hard to do justice in a single tasting so we will be presenting the champagnes of Jacques Selosse in three parts.
The first tasting will provide an overview of the different Selosse labels including a dip into some of the specific vineyard parcels (“lieux-dits”). The second tasting will consider the influence of the disgorgement dates and bottle aging on his three principal labels: Initiale, Version Originale and Substance. The final tasting presents a vertical of the estate’s vintage champagnes.
The series will be conducted by the first and only Singaporean Master of Wine, Mr Tan Ying Hsien MW. Ying has spoken on wine in Singapore, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, London, Ningxia and Perth. He has judged at international wine competitions frequently, including the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition and Decanter Asia Wine Awards. Ying is also very engaged in the education programme of the Institute of Masters of Wine, mentoring and advising a number of students world-wide.
